CUSTOM CURVED STAIRCASES – MODELS & PRICES

What is the price of a Curved Staircase?

Depending on staircase design, on materials and engineering involved in the manufacturing, the price of a Curved Staircase can vary from $8.000 to $ 50.000 and higher. The curved staircase is usually the central feature of a house, hotel, shopping center or commercial building. As Custom Curved Staircases Models & Prices we can propose following designs:

Curved Staircase Shape and Design

The shape of the staircase and the available space play a big role in the final cost of the staircase. We design our stairways according to the existing structure and its structural elements. If the building has been provided with the suitable structural supports, no special fixings for the staircase are needed. If on the other hand the walls or ceilings in the staircase area are not solid or self-supporting we need to design special fixings for the stairway and this may increase the final price. Completely free-standing stairways are sometimes required.

Cost- effective Curved Stairs

Using special engineering and smart design we have been able to develop a special range of cost-effective Curved Staircases Solutions.

  • Structural support element. The supporting structure can be designed as central curved spine or double spine. The basic elements are conceived to meet static requirements and allow easy installation on site. Stairs components are in wood, metal, crystal or other new materials as fiberglass or polycarbonate. We can easily match any interior design and achieve a classical or modern look.  Perfect functionality and stunning design are distinctive features of this unique curved staircases range. Depending on the space available for the staircase you can unleash your imagination and create the curved  shape you prefer.  If the radius is small your final design will be more similar to a spiral staircase, on the other hand  if the radius is big you can have a huge helical staircase. On smaller diameter you may not need an internal railing and this will reduce costs even more.
  • Steps. Pine, Fir wood and beech are the cheaper options for steps. They can have a natural clear finish or be stained to imitate color of more prestigious wood species as walnut, oak, mahogany and others.
  • Risers. Check with your building officer  if you can design your staircase with open risers or if you need to add closed risers or half risers to reduce the vertical gap among steps. For a cost-effective solution we suggest wooden half-risers or L-shaped tubular brackets.
  • Railing. The material used plays an important part in the final price of the stairway. A wooden railing with wooden curved handrail is more expensive than a powder coated steel railing.
To achieve a classic design the spindles could be manufactured in wrought iron. For a modern and minimalist design we suggest the powder coated spindles. The railing color can match the supporting structure or any other item you have in the house.
  • Landing balustrade. Whenever you need a guard-rail or a balustrade at the top floor this should match the staircase railing in terms of materials and colors. The glass balustrade is also very popular nowadays. The framed straight glass balustrade is available at affordable prices.

Premium Curved Stairs

Using the laser cut technology we can shape and cut steel stringers to achieve the design you want, being this a small twisted staircase or a foyer huge helical stairway.

  • Structural support element. Lateral stringers, sometimes also called fascias, are the main structural supports that hold the steps and risers in place and provide the necessary soundness to the whole staircase. There are some options to have laser-cut stringers specially shaped and placed underneath steps, however the most common design is to have them  fixed to the side of steps. Based on the width of the staircase, on the structural fixing points available and on the railing model  we always design the stringers to be sound and with the minimum flexibility.
  • Steps. We suggest to use beech, oak  or iroko wood. The price is just right and the quality high. Iroko is harder than beech and is sometimes used also on outdoor staircases. To improve design and safety on steps you can add stainless steel non-slip strips. Another option you may want to look at are mild steel steps (and risers) which can be powder coated in the same color of the railing. You may then decide to clad your steel steps with carpet, wood  or any other material. *Risers. If your stairway needs closed risers (or half risers) many options at affordable prices are available.
  • Railing. If you want to have good value for your money and keep your price just right we suggest a stainless steel railing. You will have a very elegant, shiny and contemporary design. Moreover stainless steel is a perfect material, very easy to clean and lasts a life-long. Many railing design are also available as combination of wood and wrought iron, wood and powder coated steel or all wood. If you have decided for wood steps it may be a stylish choice to match them with posts of same wood type and color.
  • Landing balustrade. Stainless steel balustrade to match the staircase railing is once more the best choice. Building regulations may require an additional glass or Plexiglas panel to avoid climbing.

Premium Curved Staircase

Luxury Curved Stairs
Custom Curved Staircases Models & Prices

Luxury Curved Stairs are the ultimate design element in private Villas, magnificent Apartments but also sumptuous Offices, sleek Restaurants and 5 or 6 Stars Hotel. The best High-End Design, top engineering and premium materials are the keys to achieve a one of a kind staircase masterpiece. No limit for the final price. Just to give you an idea the final price of the glass staircase fitted in the San Francisco Apple Store was $ 1,000,000 and it is not even a curved staircase, it is made of straight flights !!

Do you know that some stairs are made of real silver and gold?

  • Structural support element. Lateral stringers are very popular, however a really exclusive staircase design can be also achieved with an engineered curved central spine. Lateral stringers or central spine are in powder coated steel, stainless steel or curved wood.
  • Steps. Walnut or mahogany wood types are the best choice to have a really stunning design. The solid walnut in particular has a very elegant texture, dark flamed and striped veins. It has a high cost because the walnut wood as raw material is difficult to find. There are however many types of walnut species, European walnut, American or African walnut. Each of them has different properties and features, the cost can then vary too.
  • Risers. Open, closed risers or half risers many options are possible.
  • Railing. Curved tempered glass railing is nowadays the top design feature in a house or commercial space. Curved glass can be fixed to side of stringers or steps with stainless steel bolts or sandwiched into the stringers for a real elegant and seamless solution. There are many different types of glass. However toughened and laminated glass panels are the type of  glass we suggest.
  • Toughened glass,  also known as tempered glass, is a must in balustrade systems as it is up to five times stronger than regular glass. Ordinary glass is for safety reasons not allowed in stairs railing and balustrades. Toughened glass is specially treated so that it is really hard to break and if it does it will break into small, blunt pieces under pressure, making it much safer than shards of normal glass.
  • Laminated glass technically has the same strength as standard glass but has a PVB plastic layer hidden among glass layers. If the glass breaks the PVB plastic interlayer hold the glass splinters inside and avoid any possible injury. Glass is available in many colors. Decorative glass panels can be frosted or tinted.
  • Another luxury railing you may want to look at is the stainless steel railing with gold inserts. If you have a high budget for your curved staircase this may be a good option for you.
  • Landing balustrade. We suggest you to match the landing balustrade with the stairway railing model. Glass is however always a good choice as it can be easily combined to modern or traditional interior designs.

Marble and Stone Staircases
Custom Curved Staircases Models & Prices

They are among the most luxury  staircase designs and honestly here we have no limit for the final price. Stone staircases have a timeless elegance and are again the center piece in any Interior Design. Within the huge range of stone  choices available today, the white marble staircase is the most elegant. You can watch the timeless elegance of many foyer stairways and helical white staircase in many modern and classic movies. In terms of pricing as a more cost-effective option you could have a granite staircase or a bright limestone stairway with the same durable and practical features of marble stairs. If you really like stone stairs but have a limited budget you may decide upon an easy way to convert to your existing concrete staircase by cladding stone treads and risers with marble or granite tiles. Let yourself be inspired and create an eye-catching marble, granite or stone staircase. There will be no need of major building work and you can save a good amount of money.

Some of the most popular types and colors of marble used in manufacturing staircases are Botticino Marble, White Carrara Marble, Yellow Travertine, Crema Marfil Marble, Pink Portugal Marble, Red Travertine Marble, Red Verona Marble and Black Marquinia.

Granite staircases are sometimes furthermore preferred to marble ones because granite is more moisture and stain resistant than marble. Due to low water absorption and frost resistance, granite is  in fact  also used on outdoor curved stairs. The steps surface has to be treated to become anti-slip. There is a wide range of colors available for granite as white, grey, black, red. Some types of granite are even greenish.

Is the weight of stone staircase an issue?Stone stairs are of course much heavier than wooden or metal stairs. This is something that your engineers have to take into account when planning your house for the curved  staircase. They may  need to assess additional supports into walls or reinforce beams.

At this stage we may suggest to have stairs manufactured as a combination of glass, stainless steel and marble steps. The staircase fitting however normally happens when the whole project is almost completed. At this stage architects, contractors or clients often ask us to review costs and suggest a more cost-effective staircase solution. At this point we come out with our best suggestions keeping in mind that what we want to achieve for all our projects is a stunning design. Site preparation and structural calculations

The site preparation may also play a role in the final price of the staircase. When we are asked to produce a curved staircase we usually  issue a feasibility study and hence check all issues we may have in terms of design and structural soundness. It often comes out that the building has not been conceived to support the load of the curved staircase, the fixing point are weak and not properly designed. Our engineers will have to design thicker stringers as structural support elements on the staircase and plan special plates to fix the staircase to the floor at departure and to the slab at the top. Intermediate landings may be needed if the staircase has many steps and risers.
All those additional elements have to be taken into account in the final price of the staircase. To reduce those costs you may ask to your engineers, architects and builders to produce suitable reinforced concrete pad stones, to add steel  props inside a non-supporting  wall, to reinforce slabs with steel I-beams etc. Many options can be possible. Our engineers will work with your team to ensure the best structural support for your building and for your staircase.
On request, our structural engineers can supply a complete structural calculation report for the staircase. With this report it will be very easy for you to find out the best way to prepare your site to reach our curved staircase.

Curved Staircase Installation

All our curved staircases are fully pre-fitted in the factory, this allows a straight forward installation on site. We can provide you with videos, fitting instructions and suggestions on how to complete the installation. All stairs parts have to be assembled step by step. Depending on the space and tools you have on site you may decide to start from the top and go down or to start from the bottom step.  Some curved staircases maybe easier to install than traditional stairs and therefore you may want to try to install it by yourself. For the majority of curved staircases though a skilled professional team is recommended. The installation service may not be cheap, but on bespoke staircases a good installation will make the difference in the final result for sure.
